Job Description Summary
Operates and adjusts by-product plant performing required tests and keeping accurate records. Operates, maintains, monitors and repairs composting systems and equipment while conducting required tests and keeping accurate records of the composting operation. The operation of the by-products plant and the composting operation are completed by performing the following duties.
Job Description
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.
Maintains the proper balance of effluent waste particulate discharge to land application and cattle feed solids as directed by supervision. Adjusts centrifuge, CAF and related equipment to maintain centrate, cake solids, and effluent by comparing sludge levels, centrate readings, feed rates, spin tests and back-drive percentages.
Performs minor preventive maintenance on by-products equipment such as greasing, and oil changes. Adds oil, lubricates equipment, and reports all discrepancies to immediate supervisor, and enters the discrepancies in the proper logs. Selects the proper tool and oil for use in performing preventive maintenance work orders. Makes minor repairs to equipment such as hoses, valves, pipe replacements, etc..
Uses laboratory equipment to perform by-products tests. This test equipment includes but is not limited to: pH probes, centrifuges, imhoof cones and O'haus moisture balance scales. Performs monitoring of influent and effluent quality and collects samples required to maintain compliance of the State Waste Discharge Permit as directed by supervision.
Monitors operation of by-product plant by visual inspection of all by-product equipment, and monitors water quality discharge from by-products plant. Checks equipment for vibration, unusual noises and lubrication levels.
Responsible for handling, mixing, and maintaining proper amounts of chemicals in the waste systems by using guidelines provided by the supervisor and vendors. Insures proper handling and storage of full and empty drums to prevent spills and the release of chemicals.
Checks and inventories oil and other empty drums stored outside to insure there are no residual oil or chemicals left in the drums. Prepares drums for shipment by cleansing or emptying in a proper manner. Corrects and reports unsafe or unsanitary conditions found in drum storage area to immediate supervisor.
Other duties may be assigned.
Maintains a clean and safe work area by cleaning weir rings, hoppers, floors, handrails, tanks, gutters, walls and equipment in the by-product plant. Monitors and operates plant wells and pumps by checking flows, pressures, usage's and pumps. Operates the plant fire system pump in the event of a fire. Loads and samples trucks with by-products and calls for proper trucks to maintain levels in hoppers, tanks and other vessels. Inventories and recommends chemical orders, supplies this information to supervision for action. Takes and prepares samples for outside laboratories.
Start up, operation and shutdown of the composting operation. Reads meters and gauges or automatic recording devices at specified intervals to verify proper operating conditions of the composting system. Keeps records (logs) of the composting operation on each shift that the composting system is operated. Corrects MINOR mechanical problems such as electrical and mechanical controls and valves pertaining to the composting operation.
Load and unload trucks. This includes, but is not limited to: straw, potato by-products and compost.
Operate various types of farm equipment as required. These include but are not limited to: yard lifts, tractors, front-end loader, tub grinder and batch mixer.
