The Video Production Engineer position supports video technology use and maintenance needs for the Frost School of Music (FSOM). This needs include the use of such technology in our concert halls, classrooms, recording studios, and faculty studios.
This person is responsible for technical design and troubleshooting for event and recorded productions, as well as contributing to the maintenance, configuration, and design of multimedia production systems as it applies to FSOM operations.
The Video Production Engineer will leverage knowledge of existing systems and services, as well as capabilities available in the marketplace, to create the most effective solutions to meet the media and live event needs of the School. The candidate must use independent discretion and judgment to prioritize tasks and provide recommendations regarding issues. The Production Engineer will report to the Director of Production Services.
The position requires a high level of independent proficiency in setting up and operating audio and video production equipment for recording studios, concert halls and other FSOM facilities. The individual will often work with students and must exhibit an ability to train and mentor volunteers of various skills levels and to interact with faculty and staff in reinforcing School policies, practices, and procedures. This position requires a flexible work schedule to accommodate coverage for evening and/or weekend productions and events.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist the Video Production Manager and Director of Production Services and provide support in audio-visual recording, and streaming of concerts and recitals
- Provide ongoing maintenance, support, and hardware/software updates for all studio editing and recording systems; document all issues with equipment, software
- Train and oversee student engineers as they support audio-video production for Frost
- Responsible for providing audio-visual technical assistance for FSOM programs, classes, and marketing platforms
- Facilitate the daily operation and workflow usage of production equipment in the various media production facilities used by students, faculty and staff. Support and advise student productions as needed
- Responsible for exporting & publishing end product to various platforms for broadcast, Web, social media and mobile devices as needed
- Maintains accurate records, logs and transcribing production activities for FSOM studios as required
- Edits, transcodes and assembles final audio/video recorded material; ensuring consistency and relevancy to production; monitoring technical quality of end product
- With the Production Services team, maintain and support all rehearsal hall, classroom, faculty studio, and keyboard/multi-media lab audio and video equipment. This includes technology for both synchronous and asynchronous teaching, but not including faculty computers
- Work with FSOM's UM IT liaison to coordinate audio-visual and information technologies across Frost
- Provide technical and creative input to continuously improve FSOM's teaching spaces and learning modalities
- Other related duties as assigned
Skills and Abilities
- Expert knowledge of video and audio production and postproduction work flow
- Knowledge of hardware such as Tricaster and other video switchers, PTZ cameras, and video routing.
- Advanced knowledge of music/media production software, including but not limited to DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Premier and/or Final Cut Pro is highly desirable
- Experience in video projection mapping is desirable
- Ability to troubleshoot equipment, report findings and make repairs of diagnostic findings
- Knowledge of both Apple and Windows products required
- Some experience and/or willingness to learn basics in audio recording/amplification
- Strong teamwork skills
Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent with completion of 1-year program of study from a vocational/technical school
- Minimum 2 years of related experience. Any relevant education, certifications and/or work experience may be considered
- Bachelor's degree preferred in Information Technology, Engineering, Information Systems or related field
- Familiarity with video recording and processing equipment and processes
- Good planning, scheduling, and multitasking skills
- Strong problem solving skills
- Must have excellent interpersonal skills and must be able to communicate effectively both written and verbally
- Must be comfortable working autonomously with little to no supervision, and in a team environment
- Must have demonstrated organizational ability and follow-through
- Must have demonstrated ability to work in a fast paced, dynamic environment
- Must have strong attention to detail
- Must be able to lift at least 40-50 lbs without assistance, using proper lifting techniques and/or with assistance of a pallet jack. Must be able to stand for extended periods of time to perform repairs
