Important note: Applicants seeking short-term or part-time work with the University of Hawai'i may apply for Casual Hire positions, which include administrative, professional, and technical (APT) or instructional-type positions. Because of the temporary nature of these appointments, Casual Hire employees are not eligible for most benefits as provided to regular BOR and Civil Service employees (i.e. paid holidays/leave).Casual Hire appointments may last for up to 89 days for full-time employees, and up to 1 calendar year for part-time employees. Continuation is dependent on satisfactory performance, program needs, and renewal of funds.

Duties and Responsibilities:Assist with and participate in the hiring of the peer mentors.Oversee the training of the peer mentors in implementing program support to students and general office operations, including developing training materials as necessary and appropriate.Meet regularly with the peer mentors to assess their progress, effectiveness and identify any additional needs that should be addressed.Assist the peer mentors to support Native Hawaiian students, including recording of student: mentor meetings on the students lists, maintain accuracy of student lists, and monitor students persistence from one semester to the next.Maintain regular communication with the Kapo'oloku Counselor/Coordinator and/or the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs to share progress, assessment and concerns regarding the peer mentors.Assist in the training and onboarding of the permanent Student Services Specialist.Under the direction of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs or their designee, assist in the training and onboarding of the permanent Kapo'oloku Native Hawaiian Student Success Counselor/Coordinator.Other duties as assignedMinimum Qualifications:Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Hawaiian Studies, Counseling, Education, Social Work, Public Administration, or a related field and one (1) year of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for student services; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills, and abilities as indicated.Functional knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques in the area of student services, recruitment, orientation, evaluating student records, and advising students or related work demonstrated by the knowledge, understanding, and ability to apply concepts and terminology.Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation, write reports and procedures, and communicate effectively in a variety of situations.Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team members, and individuals.Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.

Desirable Qualifications:Experience in providing counseling, academic/career planning and/or teaching Native Hawaiians at the post-secondary level; advocacy work within the Hawaiian community, or a combination of these experiences.Considerable knowledge of Native Hawaiian culture, language, history, educational programs, issues, and resources.Experience working with and training peer mentors or student workersEvidence of commitment to Kapi'olani Community College's vision of positioning itself as a model indigenous serving institution whose graduates strengthen the social, economic, and sustainable advancement of Hawai'i and the world.
