The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Rehabilitation Therapies is seeking a Staff Nurse (RN). A Staff Nurse will assess patients' nursing care needs, plan and provide care based on needs, evaluate effectiveness of care provided.

Selective candidates are eligible for a sign-on bonus up to $10,000. Current UI employees are not eligible.

Characteristic Duties of our Staff Nurses include but are not limited to:

  • Clinical Practice
    • Initially assesses patient's health status by gathering information and identifies patient's actual and potential problems.
    • Maintains ongoing assessment of patient status based on information gathered by interviewing and observation.
    • Develops care plans using assessment data that integrates medical and nursing therapies including input from patient's family and other health care team members.
    • Collaborates with other health care team members in delivery of health care services for patients.
    • Involves patient's family and other health care team members in discharge planning.
    • Implements patient care plan according to established standards and patient care priorities.
    • Demonstrates competency in performance of technical skills.
    • Monitors patients for critical changes and initiates appropriate emergency procedures.
    • Maintains a safe environment for patients and strives to meet their maximum security and comfort needs.
    • Evaluates response of patient to plan of care and nursing interventions and revises patient care to meet changing needs.
  • Administration
    • Assumes delegated responsibility for the care of a particular group of patients and the unit for a given work period.
    • Provides timely, constructive feedback to peers and support staff.
    • Communicates effectively with nurse clinicians to enhance the operation of the nursing care unit.
    • Supports unit, department and hospital policies and procedures.
    • Maintains responsibility for quality patient care.
    • Demonstrates willingness to support change for the improvement of patient care and unit operation.
  • Education
    • Promotes, participates and evaluates patient/family health education.
    • Contributes to the learning experiences of students.
    • Participates in the education and direction of nursing personnel.
  • Research
    • Incorporates results of quality assurance programs in daily patient care activities.
    • Participates as directed in research activities.
  • Professional Responsibilities
    • Assumes responsibility for ongoing self-learning maintenance of clinical skills.
    • Maintains responsibility for legal, professional and institutional requirements.
    • Preserves patient right to confidentiality and functions as a patient advocate.
    • Demonstrates knowledge of organizational structure by following appropriate lines of communication.
    • Analyzes own performance critically and sets goals.

Education and Certification Requirements
  • An Associate's Degree in Nursing, a Diploma in Nursing, a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing or a Master's Degree in Nursing is required.
  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required.
Required Qualifications
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Demonstrates excellent people skills with patients/families and peers as demonstrated through written and verbal interactions.
  • General computer skills
  • Demonstrates excellent customer service skills.
  • BLS certification

Desirable Qualifications
  • Experience working in ambulatory clinic setting.
  • Experience working with EPIC.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing is highly desired (or currently working to complete within 2 years)
  • Specialized degree, education and/or certification in pulmonary related field, e.g., medical intensive care experience, asthma educator certification.
  • One year experience working with pulmonary patients.
  • Basic knowledge of respiratory pathophysiology, exercise physiology, inhalers, nutrition, risk factors, physical activity guidelines, behavior modification strategies, and motivational interviewing/health coaching techniques.
