Position Summary:

The Division of Allergy and Immunology serves the children of North Carolina in the diagnosis and treatment of known or suspected immune deficiencies and allergic diseases, including food and environmental allergies. The Center for Environmental Medicine, Asthma and Lung Biology conducts research studies involving a variety of different experimental models. These include in silico, in vitro, animal in vivo, and human clinical studies aimed at examining the effects of environmental agents and inhaled toxicants, including endotoxin, tobacco products, ozone, woodsmoke and other ambient pollutants. Their research is aimed at understanding the health effects of inhaled contaminants on the lung and heart.

The Division of Allergy and Immunology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks a full-time Research Assistant Professor on the variable track to join a highly successful academic team. This new faculty member will serve as an investigator, collaborator, and mentor in a team of physician and basic scientists. This position will develop and/or support new funded research projects in the area of pediatric environmental health research. Specific research will focus on development of experimental models to assess airway cell dysfunction, mucociliary clearance of inhaled particles, and environmental lung diseases. Experience in developing strategies for analyzing clinical samples would also be considered relevant. It is also expected that this position will submit for independent funding (1-2 NIH submissions/year), publish peer-reviewed manuscripts as senior author (1-2 senior author, 2-3 co-author), and serve as primary mentor for trainees at various levels of their training (1-2 trainees/year).

Research Collaboration with the UNC CEMALB, the Children's Research Institute, and members of the Curriculum in Toxicology & Environmental Medicine will be strongly encouraged and supported.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

The selected candidate must be PhD trained and will have significant experience including published, funded research related to airway cell dysfunction, mucociliary clearance of inhaled particles, and/or environmental lung diseases. The ability to develop experimental models or strategies for analyzing clinical samples is an essential skill for this position. Strong procedural skills are also required, as well as the ability to mentor students at different levels.

The selected candidate must have direct experience in respiratory toxicology or pulmonary research with a proven track record of scientific innovation and scientific integrity. Applicants must have proven ability to analyze and integrate information from diverse disciplines, as well as a demonstrated ability to develop and advance new experimental concepts and models.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Some post-graduate research experiences in an academic research position in a program focusing on environmental health research is preferred. Additionally, a significant publication record and evidence of scientific research funding is desired, as well as a desire to work in a cross-disciplinary research team.
