Job Purpose

Create opportunities for internal and external members of the college community to experience the visual arts through the display of a variety of artifacts and works of art. Work in concert with the VP for Advancement to develop and maintain all aspects of the Pryor Art Gallery and works of art acquired by the college. Grow the Pryor Art Gallery in a variety of ways with emphasis on quality exhibits, foot traffic/engagement and financial support.

This is a 29-hour a week, part-time position on the Columbia Campus.

Essential Functions

  1. Negotiate for and acquire quality exhibits that will enhance the community's awareness and appreciation of the visual arts and that will have appeal to a wide cross-section of the college's service area.
  2. Responsible for all aspects of an exhibit including but not limited to: contracts, insurance, arranging transport of exhibit, setup/removal, public marketing/press releases, social media and website, artist receptions, and purchases made for the permanent collection.
  3. Maintain records, location, and care of permanent collection.
  4. Participate in networking opportunities and grow relationships with artists, exhibitors, and community to cultivate support.
  5. In concert with facilities and security maintain and secure the physical space.
  6. Seek and cultivate support for the gallery through grants, patrons, and sponsors.
  7. Establish and maintain processes for electronic database maintenance and cataloguing (art inventory, visitors to gallery, etc).
  8. Operate within budgets and plan accordingly.
  9. Provide reports that provide necessary data for decision making.
  10. Seek ways to involve Pryor Art Gallery internally (student learning experiences) and externally through varied ways such as artist talks, demonstration of techniques, etc.
  11. Support, partner and assist with initiatives of the Office of Advancement/Foundation.

Supplemental Functions

  1. Remain current in the field of art to enhance effectiveness.
  2. Apprise oneself of activities, programs, and goals of the College.
  3. Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education, Training and Experience

  1. Prefer degree in art history or in related area.
  2. Prefer experience as curator or in related field.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Worker Characteristics

  1. Knowledge of and/or training in the area of visual arts.
  2. Oral and written communication skills.
  3. Planning and organizational skills.
  4. Strong interpersonal skills, especially the ability to work effectively within a complex organization dedicated to working with and respecting others.
  5. Computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office package, email, ability to learn and use software for support of work functions.
  6. Self-starting, entrepreneurial and creative in formulating and executing ideas, opportunities, and strategies for developing the use of the Pryor Art Gallery with appropriate discernment of when to seek input, guidance and collaboration.
  7. Work effectively as a team member.
  8. High level of energy, initiative and creativity.
  9. Decision-making and negotiating skills.

Working Conditions

  1. Normal sitting and movement in an office environment.
  2. Visual and hand usage of a computer.
  3. Lifting and climbing when putting up/taking down exhibits.
  4. Standard work hours with some modifications based on gallery/department events.

Hiring Salary Range: $ 30,470- $38,240

This part-time position is based at the Columbia, TN Campus.
