The Academic Coordinator manages academic education, caregiver education, and/or school consultation for the academic needs of adolescent patients in Inpatient and Day Hospital programs. In this role, the Academic Coordinator has the opportunity to interact directly with patients and facilitate their re-integration into the community. As such, the Academic Coordinator must be a passionate individual with excellent communication and organization skills.

The Academic Coordinator plays a crucial role in ensuring young patients at Shepherd Center do not fall behind in school.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assesses patient needs and designs, schedules, implements and tracks school classes accordingly.
  • Serves as Shepherd liaison to the patients' parents and home school system.
  • Teach, guide and instruct patients/students in individual or group settings and communicates from a developmentally appropriate perspective Shepherd School information.
  • Document contractual agreements between Shepherd School and public-school systems and process billings per contract.
  • Document transcripts of work (academic and therapy) processed and forwarded to schools.
  • Practices proper safety techniques in accordance with Center and departmental policies and procedures. Responsible for the reporting of employee/patient/visitor injuries or accidents, or other safety issues to the supervisor and in the occurrence notification system.
  • Monitors and ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements, organizational standards, and policies and procedures related to area of responsibility. Identifies potential risk areas within area of responsibility and supports problem resolution process.
REQUIRED MINIMUM EDUCATION :
  • Bachelor's Degree from a four-year college or university
REQUIRED MINIMUM CERTIFICATION:
  • Georgia Educator Certificate Type T (Teacher) in a secondary (grades 7-12) field.
  • BLS (Basic Life Support Instructor) certification

REQUIRED MINIMUM EXPERIENCE:
  • Special Education experience, preference for Hospital/Homebound, Orthopedic ally Handicapped, Learning Disabilities and/or Brain Injury experience.
REQUIRED MINIMUM SKILLS:
  • Effective time management skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Basic computer skills.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Georgia Educator Certificate Type T (Teacher) in a secondary (grades 7-12) field. Preference for Special Education, Orthopedic- ally Handicapped and/or Learning Disabilities certification.
  • Master's degree (MBA, MA) or equivalent
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Uses body, tools, or special devices to safely, effectively, and efficiently to move, guide, or place patients. Involves some latitude for judgement with regard to precision attained and the selection of what adaptive device(s) to utilize.
  • Ability to transfer and position patients, consistent with lifting up to 50 lbs.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Some potential for exposure to blood and body fluids.
