Job Title:Post Doctoral ScholarDepartment:Arts and Sciences | Anthropology

The Skeletal Anatomy Lab (SAL) led by Dr. Habiba Chirchir housed in the Anthropology department at The Ohio State University is recruiting a post doctoral scholar to start the position Autumn 2025. The post doctoral scholar will contribute to and lead existing projects and also contribute to new projects in SAL. They will help manage the resources and daily lab activities of SAL projects. They will travel to museums and liaise with microCT scanning facilities to collect data. The post doctoral scholar will scan bone specimens using a micro CT data on campus, and collaborate on data analysis and preparation of manuscripts. They lead data analysis and write peer-reviewed manuscripts and grants independently and in a collaborative environment. The post doctoral scholar will benefit from career development support through training and mentoring and will be given time to develop and work on independent projects, including support to publish their previous research.

SAL's projects focus on the study of trabecular and cortical bone morphology of hominins, extant primates including humans, felids and canids- both extinct and extant, and bovids. SAL's projects seek to understand the patterns of gracile morphology and to interpret functional morphology particularly related to the interpretation of locomotor behavior in extinct and extant mammals.

Required Qualifications:

Ph.D. in biological anthropology, paleontology, anatomy, or related fields by the start of this appointment. Experience studying skeletal morphology.

Desired Qualifications:

The ideal candidate should have experience working with skeletal material and high resolution 3D images (microCT) of bones, and should have knowledge or willingness to learn 3D image segmentation, especially fossil image segmentation using all available tools such as MIA-Clustering and AI powered tools. Skills in high resolution image-based data collection. Experience using 3D imaging programs e.g., Dragonfly, Amira, Avizo, Quant3D, Geomagic etc. Quantitative skills especially in application to comparative datasets. Experience working independently and collaboratively in a team.
