Purpose of Position

This position will contribute to National Resource Center on Native American Aging (NRCNAA) and Resource Center on Native Aging and Disability (RCNAD) policy and research activities. The Policy Specialist will assist senior research and policy staff in using data findings to advocate and raise awareness of Native Elder health issues.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Identify and track Native aging related proposed and issued regulations and policies that impact tribal urban American Indian/Alaska Native/Native Hawaiian Elders.
  • Help inform goals and objectives related to Native aging health and social needs through research and policy.
  • Research and identify policy issues impacting both tribal and urban elder populations.
  • Identify policy issues related to long-term services and supports related to the Native aging population in tribal and urban communities serving Native Elders.
  • Conduct policy research and data translation/communication for a range of audiences at the tribal, state, and federal levels.
  • Develop executive summaries, policy reports, and other deliverables that translate and share key findings.
  • Assist with information dissemination to key stakeholders at the tribal, state, and federal levels.
Required Competencies
  • Ability to interpret research findings and an understanding of Native aging population related policies.
  • Strong communication skills to coordinate and maintain relationships with tribal and urban Native Elders, agency staff, and other stakeholders to develop and maintain collaborative relationships.
  • Strong report writing skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task and work as a part of a team.
Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Public Policy, Indian Law and Policy, Public Administration, Public Health, Health Policy, Political Science, or related field. Will consider other degrees with applicable work experience.
  • Experience working with research and policy specific to Indigenous populations.
  • Experience using computers/software, including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrate a minimum of 5 years of successful work relationships and/or other non-work connections and interactions with Indigenous populations.
  • Knowledge and understanding of protocols that involve research and policy with Indigenous populations.
  • Experience in community engagement with Indigenous populations.
  • Ability to assist with authorship of policy briefs, reports, or other publications relevant to NRCNAA and RCNAD priorities.
  • Knowledge of Native aging health policy issues and familiarity with policy-making processes at the tribal, state, and federal levels related to the Native Elder population.
