Department Information

Indiana University Public Safety pursues IU's commitment to providing the greatest degree of safety for all members of the IU community, consistent with the university's mission and environment, applicable legal and professional standards, and available resources. IU Public Safety directly oversees the IU Police Department, University Environmental Health and Safety, and Emergency Management and Continuity with a team of approximately 300 dedicated staff on a 24/7/365 operational basis across all campuses.

Job Summary

  • Performs non-law enforcement duties for Indiana University Police Department (IUPD) including radio dispatch duties, security assignments for buildings and events, and special assignments that necessitate the presence of IUPD but not the presence of a sworn Police Officer.
  • Liaises with other workers and are briefed on the situation and issues of the day.
  • Keeps the department and the other workers advised on situational developments as appropriate.
  • Works closely with faculty, staff, students, and visitors from diverse backgrounds.
  • Observes and reports suspicious activity, can approach individuals, and enforces university policy without compromising personal safety, and must call for a sworn officer to detain or arrest.
  • Cadets do not have police authority.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required
  • Currently enrolled as a full-time student at Indiana University and in good academic standing.
  • Maintains full-time student status and have above a 2.5 G.P.A. while in the program.
LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS

Required
  • Possess a valid driver's license with the ability to be insured by Indiana University upon date of hire.
SKILLS

Required
  • 21 years old the year you would graduate from the Police Academy.
  • Ability to pass a battery of physical and psychological tests.
  • Ability to pass an intensive background investigation.

Additional Information

July 21st - 25th, 2025 are mandatory attendance for Cadet Orientation week. Those that are selected for the cadet program (new and returning cadets) are required to attend in Bloomington, Indiana.

Cadets who successfully perform their duties and maintain academic and program standards, may be considered for entry into the IU Police Academy.

Must be or become a U.S. citizen prior to graduating from the Police Academy.
