Registered Nurse RN

Under the general direction of the Nurse Manager, Blood Donor Service, the staff nurse is responsible for assuring competent and professional nursing care to donors presenting to the Blood Donor Services, including delegation to and supervision of professional and non-professional clinical staff. The focus is on the safety of the donor and the safety of the blood collected. The staff nurse will be responsible for computer documentation of sample only, audits, merges, and final corrections of donor records. All final review and documentation of donor records and deferral information, as well as, compliance issue resolution will be the responsibility of the nurse. The staff nurse will assume the role of charge nurse in the center and on daily blood mobiles. The staff nurse may be involved in new staff orientation, staff scheduling and reviewing/revising Standard Operating Procedures. Staff nurse will have a global knowledge of operations.

  • Provides competent nursing care representing the highest of nursing standards based on specific principles and the use of accepted nursing practice.
  • Performs manual and automated blood collection.
  • Documents relevant and required donor information in accordance with all Regulatory Standards.
  • Collaborates with all involved medical professionals. Oversees non-MD BDC personnel in adhering to recognized standards.
  • In conjunction with the Lead Apheresis Technician, trains and orients new staff.
  • Troubleshoots operational issues and advances to the Nurse Manager when and where appropriate.
  • Uses resources efficiently to address changes in a fluctuating environment.
  • Assists in management of supplies and equipment.
  • Serves as a resource for all staff.
  • Provides donor education.
  • In conjunction with Lead Apheresis Technician, assists with, staff scheduling and daily assignments
  • Responsible for phlebotomy procedures and processes related to the collection of blood and blood components.
  • May serve in the capacity of charge nurse both in house and on the bloodmobile.
  • Interacts and communicates with blood drive coordinators and marketing department.
  • Knows and adheres to Universal Precautions per Regulatory Standards.
  • Participates in unit and departmental committees for formulation of BDC policies and procedures, and in Quality Assurance/Quality control activities.
  • Ensures that daily quality control and preventive maintenance procedures are completed correctly and follows Current Good Manufacturing Practices.
  • Maintains complete confidentiality of patient and donor information and records, as outlined by the MGH Privacy/Confidentiality/HIPAA policies.
  • Maintains and updates clinical knowledge and skills

Qualifications

    Qualifications:
    • Current Massachusetts licensure as a Registered Nurse
    • Current CPR certification
    • CPR Instructor certification a plus
    • Bachelor's degree in Nursing or Associate's degree in Nursing with relevant significant blood donor related experience; New graduates require a BSN degree.
    • Graduation from an accredited nursing program
    • Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience required
    • Donor service background preferred
    • Previous charge nurse experience preferred
    • Blood donor center located within the MGH main campus and on bloodmobiles. When assigned to the bloodmobile, staff meet at the center and are then transported to the blood drive site.
    • Work a variable schedule which may include early start times, later end times, weekends and various length shifts.
