Penn Vet's New Bolton Center provides an internationally renowned standard of care. Located on 700 acres in rural Chester County Pennsylvania. It has the largest case load of any academic hospital in the nation. This position is in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania.Job Description

The Nuclear Technologist position involves a variety of responsibilities focused on the safe and effective use of radioactive materials. The purpose of this position is to lead the Nuclear Medicine Department in completing all aspects of Scintigraphy and Positron Emission Tomography scans on equine patients. Under the supervision of the Supervisor of the Sports Medicine and Imaging Technicians, the Nuclear Technologist is responsible for radiation monitoring, safety, and compliance. They will operate and maintain the gamma camera and PET scanner ensuring diagnostic image acquisition, reconstruction, and storage in the PACS server. They will conduct daily quality assurance testing and maintain accurate records for inspections and audits. They will assist with the development of research projects involving nuclear medicine and train new technical staff and students. This is a 40-hour per week position Monday- Friday with occasional overtime.

Job Responsibilities

Radiation Monitoring, Safety, and Compliance

Ensure that all activities comply with federal and state regulations governing the use of radioactive materials.

Prepare documentation for regulatory inspections and audits.

Act as a point of contact during emergencies, providing expertise on nuclear safety and response.

Ensure staff, house officers, and students' compliance with safety regulations and protocols.

Monitoring radiation levels of the equine patients housed in barns which are not located in the Nuclear Medicine building.

Equipment Operation and Acquisition

Operate and maintain the gamma camera and PET scanner.

Acquire, reconstruct, and disseminate images to the PACS server.

Ensure that all equipment is calibrated and functioning correctly.

Troubleshoot and organize repairs of malfunctioning equipment.

Quality Assurance

Conduct daily testing to ensure the quality and safety of the nuclear materials, equipment, and processes.

Maintain accurate records of inspections, audits, tests, and maintenance activities.

Research and Development

Collaborate with clinicians and engineers on research projects involving nuclear technology.

Stay informed about advancements in the field of nuclear medicine.

Training

Train staff and other personnel in the safe use of nuclear medicine equipment and radiation safety practices.

Provide comprehensive training for barn staff on the importance of manure management, including environmental regulations, health and safety practices, and best management practices for manure storage.

Establish clear procedures for staff to follow in case of an emergency.

Train new staff to perform all nuclear medicine duties.

Teaching

Educate staff, house officers, veterinary students, Harcum students, and visiting practitioners on nuclear medicine and PET operations.

Other duties and responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree in Nuclear Medicine and 4-5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • Certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist (CNMT) is required.
  • Strong understanding of radiation physics, nuclear chemistry, and safety regulations.
  • Proficient in operating specialized nuclear equipment and software for data analysis.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work in both team settings and independently.
  • Horse handling experience is not required but is a bonus.
  • 40-hour work week M-F
  • Occasional overtime
