Job Summary
Under the direction of the Director of Clinical Physics, incumbent will provide full time clinical medical physics coverage in the Department of Radiation Oncology Division of Radiation Biophysics at our network facilities located at Emerson Hospital in Concord, Massachusetts and Newton-Wellesley Hospital in Newton, MA. The position will perform the range of medical physics duties including machine and patient-specific QA, commissioning and validation testing, and treatment planning consultation.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will provide clinical medical physics coverage in the Department of Radiation Oncology at MGH. Duties will include, but are not limited to, regular clinical physics coverage, participation in commissioning, upgrade, repair, acceptance testing, monthly and annual QA of treatment equipment, initial and weekly chart checks, and treatment planning consultation. The medical physicist may also assist in teaching and supervising the training of Radiation Oncology Medical Residents and Medical Physics Residents. The individual will be expected to play a leading role for one or several special areas of clinical physics support, including the maintenance/upgrade of a clinical software/hardware system, the implementation/quality control of a treatment technique, the development of quality assurance procedures, etc. as determined by the clinical physics leadership based on the need of the Department. The individual will be encouraged to participate in developmental efforts on various clinical physics projects and develop clinical expertise for at least one major treatment site. Participation in research activities is strongly encouraged for all staff members.

SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

The position requires an understanding of radiation physics, anatomy, physiology, clinical oncology, radiobiology, and radiation safety. The person should have good basic computer skills as well as those applicable to the position. Knowledgeable in health care informatics-including the resources, devices and methods to acquire, store and retrieve data. Tools include computers as well as clinical guidelines, current medical terminology, information and communication systems. Possess good communication and interpersonal skills to facilitate the exchange of information with patients, family members, and the radiation oncology treatment team as well as outside entities. The person must be able to work independently and in collaboration with other professionals.

Qualifications

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or REGISTRATIONS:

Candidates must have a graduate degree in Physics or related fields, with board certification (or eligibility) for therapeutic medical physics from the American Board of Radiology (or equivalent) required. Physicists with continuous or time-limited certificates are required to participate in the ABR Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program and successfully maintain certification.

EDUCATION:

MS or PhD degree in physics, medical physics, or in a related field is required.

EXPERIENCE:

Two years of clinical experience is required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

May be expected to work non-standard hours to support patient treatments; will be required to work in a radiation environment which is protected and monitored according to federal and state regulations.
