Position Summary: The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) Library is seeking an entrepreneurial, collaborative, innovative, self-starting and intellectually curious individual to serve as the Medical & Biomedicine Librarian . Early career librarians are welcome to apply. This position liaises with the Carle Illinois College of Medicine and Grainger College of Engineering Bioengineering departments. Reporting to the Head of Grainger Engineering Library Information Center (GELIC), the position will work in collaboration with the Bioengineering and Engineering Medical Innovation Librarian to advance services, initiatives, and partnerships as determined by the UIUC University Library and GELIC strategic goals. A detailed description of the position is listed below.

The Medical and Biomedicine Librarian will engage with faculty, staff, researchers, and students affiliated with Carle Illinois College of Medicine through instruction, reference and research consultations, systematic reviews and evidence synthesis, scholarly communication, and data management. This position may include other responsibilities including collection management or translational research, based upon the skills and interests of the incumbent. The Medical and Biomedicine Librarian will conduct research and publication to extend the library and information science body of knowledge.

Responsibilities

• Build relationships with the faculty, staff, and medical students of the Carle Illinois College of Medicine and Grainger College of Engineering to customize curricular innovations that support student success through experiential learning and partner with faculty on research projects and proposals.

• Develop services and outreach to Carle Illinois College of Medicine based upon relationships and needs assessments that meet articulated and unstated needs of the stakeholders, identify trends and changes in that discipline, and innovate new services, outreach, and instruction to improve research, clinical, and educational outcomes.

• Provide instruction based upon pedagogical best practices and innovations that reflect the needs of the profession, including instruction supporting information literacy and evidence-based medicine that promote clinical care.

• Consult with stakeholders to improve research through the implementation of best practices through evidence-based research and other innovative research services.

• Participate in initiatives of the Grainger Engineering Library Information Center.

• Maintain an active research pipeline that advances the discipline of library and information science.

• Participate in service to the profession via both internal and external opportunities.

• Contribute to the national and international reputation of the University Library through professional research, service and collaboration with national colleagues, organizations, and consortia.

Qualifications

Required:

• ALA accredited Master's Degree in Library and Information Science or PhD in a life science or engineering discipline.

• Demonstrated experience creating and providing instruction for the health or medical disciplines.

• Demonstrated experience collaborating with diverse groups and populations.

• Evidence of the ability to conduct scholarly research and work to meet the requirements for promotion and tenure.

• Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly in person and in writing.

• Demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgment and participate in collaborative endeavors.

• Demonstrated experience providing reference or research support services, including patrons from an academic or clinical library setting.

• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and to work collaboratively and effectively with others in a team environment.

• Demonstrated ability to learn information resources from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds.

Preferred:

• Experience supporting systematic reviews and evidence synthesis.

• Experience in the foundational concepts and services of research data management.

• Experience in collection development.

• Demonstrated knowledge or experience in evidence-based practice.

• Demonstrated knowledge or experience supporting medical education and curriculum.

• Demonstrated knowledge or experience supporting medical practice.

• Demonstrated knowledge or experience supporting medical researchers.

• Demonstrated experience articulating the value of information science to a variety of disciplinary faculty.

The Physical Sciences and Engineering Division of the University Library is currently home (division-wide) to 8 faculty librarians (including this position), 1 2 staff, and 4.25 FTE graduate assistants from the School of Information Sciences . Served by the Grainger Engineering Library Information Center and the other PSED Libraries, the Grainger College of Engineering at the University of Illinois is home to more than 9,000 undergraduates, 3,400 graduates and 430 faculty involved in more than 2,000 research projects totaling $239 million in research expenditures for FY 2017. Salary and Rank: The budgeted salary range for this open-rank faculty position is $65,000 to $90,000 and is commensurate with credentials and experience. The University of Illinois Library is committed to competitive salaries and attending to equity in compensation within the organization.

Librarians have faculty rank, and must demonstrate excellence in librarianship, research, and university/professional/community service in order to meet university standards for tenure and promotion. Terms of Appointment: Twelve-month appointment; 24 annual vacation days; 11 annual paid holidays; 12 annual sick-leave days (cumulative), plus an additional 13 sick-leave days (non-cumulative) available, if needed, each year; health insurance requiring a small co-payment is provided to employee (with the option to purchase coverage for spouse and dependents); required participation in State Universities Retirement System (SURS) (8% of annual salary is withheld and is refundable upon termination), with several options for participation in additional retirement plans; newly-hired employees are covered by the Medicare portion of Social Security and are subject to its deduction.
