The Certified Lactation Educator is a professional who is certified by the Childbirth and Postpartum Professional Association (CAPPA). The CLE plays a critical role in providing lactation support and education to the patients, staff, providers and breastfeeding mothers in the hospital and community. Responsibilities include offering informational, emotional, and p ractical support of breastfeeding. The CLE acts as a public advocate, as well as ensures access to International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC). The CLE acts as a role model and change agent in supporting a breastfeeding friendly culture within the hospital and community. The CLE may use their training to augment other positions, such as a registered nurse.

Qualifications
SKILLS

Required: Requires intense attention and concentration. Good visual, verbal, hearing skills, analytical and problem solving skills. Ability to effectively interact with a wide range of personality types, ages and diverse cultural backgrounds in a rapidly changing environment. Ability to utilize various computer programs.

Preferred: Bilingual

EXPERIENCE:

Required: 2 years experience working in a health-related field

Preferred: 2 yeas experience as a Certified Lactation Educator, an RN in a maternal child health setting, or other health related field preferred

EDUCATION/DEGREE:

Required: Graduation from an associate degree program in a health-related field required.

Preferred: Graduate from a BSN accredited nursing degree program, licensure as a registered nurse to practice in the state of Massachusetts.

LICENSURE, CERTIFICATIONS/REGISTRATIONS:

Required: Certification as a IBCLC by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners

Preferred: Member of the International Lactation Consultant Association
