Overview

This intern will work with our Preferred Communities (PC) program, supporting CWS in providing comprehensive case management services for refugees and migrants in the Haitian Creole-speaking community. The intern will assist in client intakes, organize client data, research essential resources, and support the caseworkers in client services. This role is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in social work, case management, and assisting marginalized communities.

Duration: 6 months.
Time Commitment: 8 hours/week, with flexibility. Preferably 4-hour shifts, and the intern must come to the office once a week.
Office Location: 1000 Dean Street, Suite 323, Brooklyn, NY 11238.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the client intake process, including gathering client information and completing forms.
  • Organize client data.
  • Research and identify resources for housing, healthcare, education, employment, and legal services.
  • Provide translation and communication support (if fluent in Haitian Creole or French).
  • Assist with case file maintenance, including organizing and updating client documents.
  • Support scheduling appointments and coordinating meetings for clients and caseworkers.
  • Assist clients in completing applications for social services (e.g., healthcare benefits)

Qualifications

  • Enrolled in an MSW (preferred).
  • Currently be an undergraduate student in the social sciences.
  • Passion for social justice issues and migrant/refugee rights.
  • Organized and detail oriented.
  • Proficient in Haitian Creole or French (preferred).

Special Requirements

Internship Chain of Command:
  • The intern will work directly with the Preferred Communities Caseworker. Approval is required before executing tasks at the request of other departments/employees to ensure that activities remain structured and aligned with learning objectives.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Case management and client services within a nonprofit setting.
  • Understanding of social services for migrants and refugees.
  • Experience working directly with clients from diverse backgrounds.
  • Translation and communication skills (if applicable).
  • Resource development and referrals for essential services.
