The Department of Clinical Studies-New Bolton Center at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine (Penn Vet) invites applications for a standing faculty position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level in large animal anesthesia, with a focus on equine anesthesia. The position will be in the Standing Faculty in the Clinician-Educator (CE) track, which supports faculty members whose responsibilities include the traditional triad of clinical service, teaching, and research. A typical division of effort for faculty in the CE track at New Bolton Center is 70% time on clinics, including clinical service and clinical teaching, and 30% time off clinics for academic efforts, including independent or collaborative research that produces scholarly publications in their area of expertise. Didactic and laboratory teaching and administrative or other service duties are included in both on and off-clinic time. The division of effort can be modified according to the focus of the successful candidate.

The successful candidate is expected to enhance the clinical, teaching, and research missions of the Section of Anesthesia at New Bolton Center. The Section is home to four diplomates of the American or European Colleges of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia and three anesthesia technicians. Six residents in training for ACVAA/ECVAA board-certification divide their time between Penn Vet's Ryan Veterinary Hospital for Companion Animals and New Bolton Center. The anesthesia/surgical patient population of the New Bolton Center Hospital for Large Animals is one of the highest worldwide, with approximately 1,400 animals being anesthetized each year for a wide variety of procedures. The Section is involved in a vibrant and steadily expanding research and education program involving collaborations with faculty from other veterinary colleges and organizations as well as medical schools and industries within and outside of North America.

Clinical responsibilities include primary anesthesia care, and supervision of anesthetic management of animal patients (majority equine) and research animals, as well as participation in the after-hours anesthesia rotation. Clinical time is devoted to New Bolton Center's Hospital; however, opportunities to participate in the clinical services at the Ryan Veterinary Hospital as well as delivery of anesthesia at zoos and animal parks in the surrounding area exists if desired by the successful applicant. The candidate is expected to participate in the academic program of the Section, including didactic and laboratory teaching of veterinary students, interns, residents, and technicians. The successful candidate will be expected to perform investigative studies in an area relevant to anesthesia and to publish their research findings and other scholarly materials. Numerous opportunities exist for collaborative projects in the School of Veterinary Medicine and Perelman School of Medicine.

 

Clinical and Academic Environment

The internationally renowned New Bolton Center Hospital for Large Animals enjoys one of the highest caseloads among peer institutions, admitting almost 7000 patients in 2024. The Department of Clinical Studies - New Bolton Center is home to over 40 diplomates of American and European specialty colleges who are in direct support of the program, including 10 double-boarded individuals. The 26 Clinician-Educators and 10 Tenure-track faculty perform the majority of the Department's research, along with post-veterinary residency students enrolled in studies toward the PhD degree in the University of Pennsylvania's Biomedical Graduate Studies through funding by New Bolton Center's Penn Veterinary Scientist Training program, and post-doctoral trainees, fellows and visiting scholars. Students enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Veterinary Medicine are highly qualified, motivated, and eager to learn.

New Bolton Center is located on 700 rolling acres of beautiful pastoral land in Kennett Square, Chester County, Pennsylvania, in close proximity to Philadelphia and major metropolitan and cultural centers. The successful candidate has the potential to access the clinical, teaching, and research units on the campus, including the Veterinary School's 200-cow Marshak Dairy and the 250-sow Penn Swine Teaching & Research Center. Opportunities exist for interaction and collaboration with other initiatives and departments, including the Center for Stewardship Agriculture and Food Security, Pathobiology, Wildlife Futures, and core laboratories working on microbial genomics, stem cell biology, orthopedic disease, and germ cell biology on the New Bolton Center Campus, and numerous programs in Philadelphia's lively University District. The three other departments of Penn Vet are located at the center of this interactive biomedical research environment, in close proximity to the Perelman School of Medicine, the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Penn Dental Medicine, The Wistar Institute, and a vast array of core facilities.

Qualifications:

 

Requirements include a DVM/VMD or equivalent degree, and board certification or eligibility in either the ACVAA or ECVAA, and evidence of research or other scholarly activity.  Engagement in research in areas relevant to anesthesia is desirable but not mandatory. Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
