Nature of Work

Under the supervision of a Recreation Specialist, a person in this position performs various duties associated with overseeing special events at Swan Harbor Farm location in Havre de Grace, MD. Event duties consist of monitoring and maintaining activity in the farmhouse and on the event grounds. The workweek schedule can vary to include evenings, weekends, and holidays.

PLEASE BE ADVISED THIS POSITION IS NOT CURRENTLY ELIGIBLE FOR BENEFITS (MEDICAL, DENTAL, VISION, ETC.). HOWEVER, MAY BE ELIGIBLE FOR RETIREMENT DEPENDING ON QUANTITY OF HOURS WORKED.

Examples of Duties

(The following examples illustrate the work performed by this position. Position may require some or all of these examples depending on the organization of work within the department. The list is not all-inclusive. This position may require related duties not listed, in order to accomplish the work of Parks & Recreation.)

EVENT WORKER:

  • Maintains a positive and inviting disposition to assure the most positive reflection on Swan Harbor Farm and Harford County Government.
  • Opens the farmhouse and conducts an inspection prior to each event.
  • Handles all inquiries of guests, caterers, and vendors.
  • Enforces Swan Harbor Farm Operating Procedures for the house, caterers, and vendors.
  • Prepares the outside grounds by cleaning walkways, tent floor area, and benches, picks up any fallen tree branches/debris from the event area.
  • Unlocks the storage shed and communicates to the caterer the number of tables and chairs to be set up.
  • Directs guests to parking area(s) and event sites.
  • Close tent side curtains in the event of inclement weather.
  • Conducts light housekeeping to sustain the farmhouse appearance and maintains the restrooms throughout the event.
  • Turns on any outside lights as needed.
  • Uses a golf cart to transport the bride, groom, and photographer to the gazebo area.
  • Patrols the grounds, monitors/empties trash receptacles, and directs park visitors away from the private event.
  • Maintains heating and air conditioning to ensure guests' comfort.
  • At the conclusion of an event, ensures caterer returns tables and chairs neatly to the storage shed and lock shed.
  • Inspects the tent area to make sure the flooring and surrounding area is free of food and debris.
  • Expected to work outside in all types of weather.
  • Makes emergency calls related to the facility or calls 911, if necessary.
  • Verifies with the caterer that all food service areas have been cleaned properly prior to their departure.
  • Staff are responsible for cleaning restrooms, vacuuming, damp mopping, etc. at the end of each event.
  • Communicates to the Recreation Specialist any safety concerns, vandalism, injuries, etc. that occur/are noticed during work hours.
  • Locks and secures the farmhouse at the conclusion of the event.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment
  • Ability to safely use power tools and equipment
  • Ability to deal with the public cooperatively and courteously
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees
  • Ability to do minor building maintenance and trash pick-up
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions
  • Ability to lift, bend, stoop, climb, and reach
  • Ability to lift medium to heavy objects
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to keep simple records and files
  • Ability to read, interpret, and enforce facility/department rules
  • May also need to know how to operate a computer and handle cash receipts
  • May also need to operate a golf cart and/or John Deer Gator
EDUCATION:
Sufficient education to read, write, and understand instructions in English.

LICENSE:
Possession of a valid Class "C" non-commercial driver's license with no more than three (3) points. Please be advised this position requires a valid driver's license. Your application will not be considered if you fail to include the full driver's license number on the electronic application.

SAFETY:
Must comply with all Federal (OSHA), State of Maryland (MOSH), safety regulations and applicable Harford County safety policies, procedures, or manual as required for this position.

RECEIVES RETIREMENT BENEFIT ONLY - WORKS A MINIMUM OF 500 HOURS IN A FISCAL YEAR.
