Job Description

An opportunity for a fixed-term/temporary Engineer in Charge is available. The Engineer in Charge will work closely with the Director/Technical Director and technical crew, supporting the NJ Spotlight newscast, remote productions/uplinks, client rentals, live/pre-tape productions and special programming.

The Engineer in Charge will oversee the design, installation, and integration of production systems, including audio and video routers, switchers, and automation systems, ensuring that all components work together seamlessly to facilitate smooth operations and efficiencies. The Engineer in Charge will also ensure the proper operation and maintenance of on-air product, equipment, and systems in the studio.

Please note this is a fixed-term temporary role to provide on-call support.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Maintain and repair a wide range of production equipment;
  • Support of Ross Acuity Switcher, Ross Xpression, and Nexio Servers;
  • Support audio and video signal integrity;
  • Responsible for installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of broadcast equipment and systems to ensure uninterrupted transmission of audio and video content;
  • Work closely with production teams to facilitate live broadcasts and ensure high-quality output;
  • Install, test, and implement projects, HD SDI cables, RF cables, network data, and fiber optic cables;
  • Oversee preventative and corrective maintenance for all studio and control room systems and equipment;
  • Oversee maintenance of ancillary equipment and operations;
  • Liaise with other departments whose procedures affect our on-air and streaming products;
  • Work with Engineering and Operation teams to guide in the buildout out of supporting infrastructure and applications;
  • Oversee and order equipment parts required for proper maintenance and on-air operation;
  • Determine priorities for repair part purchasing;
  • Obtain proposals for new equipment and make recommendations for purchases;
  • Coordinate with other departments for proper maintenance of station equipment ;
  • Other relevant duties, as assigned.

Qualified candidates will possess a strong attention to detail, the ability to communicate effectively at all levels, and the ability to work under pressure while meeting deadlines. Additional qualifications include:
  • Minimum of 5 years of studio experience in a broadcast production environment, fast-paced news and or talk shows required, with experience in live, multi-camera studio production, preferred;
  • Demonstrable knowledge of HD, 4K, NDI video compression, audio and video signal flow;
  • Fluency in TV terminology and understanding of studio technology, including robotic camera systems with the goal of identifying and addressing potential issues;
  • General understanding of all aspects and duties of the control room, including: Robotic Camera, Teleprompter, Lighting, Audio & Video Playback;
  • Proficient in live studio and remote program operations;
  • Knowledge of live news, talk and remote production operations;
  • Ability to work early mornings & holidays;
  • Must be available to cover breaking news;
  • Proficiency in Dalet Galaxy or similar newsroom computer system a plus;
  • Must be able to lift 25 lbs. and set / strike studio gear.

The compensation range for this position is $78.00 - $81.25 hourly. Internal equity considerations will be reviewed before making a final offer.
