Job Summary

Responsible for the activities of the personnel in the AFC-California Safety, Health and Environmental department; providing occupational health and safety practices, procedures, programs, and projects affecting personnel, facilities, equipment, materials, and environment at the AFC-California locations. Responsible for reviewing and incorporating health and safety standards promulgated by local, state, and federal regulations, as well as customer requirements into all AFC programs. Reports to the Executive Director of Safety, Health and Environmental for AFC. Directs through lower management levels.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Demonstrated ability to provide effective direction, leadership, and team building within the SH&E department and across other departments such as Operations, Maintenance, etc. to build a robust SH&E culture.
  • Provides technical and administrative guidance for activities in defined scope of responsibilities; advises subordinates and peers in the resolution of health and safety technical and operational problems; Recognize, evaluate, and recommend measure for control of chemical, safety, and physical hazards at the work site.
  • Provides technical and administrative leadership on technology issues and concept definitions critical to the maintenance of AFC business posture. Advises management as to integration of industrial health and safety and environmental efforts with those of AFC. Provides short- and long-range planning for health and safety, and environmental operations and implements approved plans.
  • Coordinates and manages health and safety and environmental function interface with regulatory agencies and customer representatives. Maintains frequent contacts with inter-organizational managers and with regulatory agencies. May act as coordinator for regulatory inspections and audits. Assures activities within defined scope are accomplished in accordance with AFC policies, sound business practices and are in compliance with applicable regulations and requirements.
  • Establishes operational policies which affect subordinate multi-level functional groups; Interprets, executes, and recommends health and safety and environmental policy changes
  • Responsible for conducting audits and evaluations to determine health and safety program effectuation.
  • Provides direct oversight to the AFC-CA Training Manager and is responsible for the development of AFC health and safety, and environmental training programs.
  • Provide indirect oversight to AFC Security Manager and is responsible for the overall site security at the California sites.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Typically requires 12 years of experience in the related area and bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. 5+ years managerial experience required.
  • Related experience in the chemical or pharmaceutical industry. Strong environmental skills preferred.
  • Experience with CA health and safety, and environmental regulations preferred.
  • Experience with Workers Compensation regulations.
COMPETENCIES/SKILLS
  • Demonstrated supervisory skills including the ability to plan and coordinate the activities of assigned departments.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Must be willing to speak in front of small and large groups with confidence.
  • Demonstrated project planning and team technical and administrative leadership to accomplish organizational goals and commitments.
  • Understanding and knowledge of chemistry and/or use of chemical processes and manufacturing equipment.
  • Knowledge of industrial hygiene and safety principles, theories, concepts, and technicques.
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge and interpretation of existing and proposed changes in industrial health and safety, and environmental regulations and legislation. Ability to communicate considely and clearly to legal representatives and regulatory officials.
CERTIFICATIONS and LICENSES
  • Certified Safety Professional or Certified Industrial Hygienist preferred. Ability and willingness to obtain certification if not currently certified.
