Overview
Coordinates the evaluation, authorization, medical management, surgical recovery and distribution of organs for transplantation or research from deceased organ donors; works with other departments and hospital or transplant teams to facilitate the recovery of organs and tissues for transplantation or research.

Compensation range for this position is commensurate with experience ranging from $40.86 - $44.23 per hour plus night shift differential.
Responsibilities
The following essential functions are the basic job duties that an employee must be able to perform, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Adhere to all policies and procedures in carrying out the responsibilities of this position.
  • Work 12 hour night shift (7PM-7AM)
  • Demonstrate support for our mission through annual participation in a donor family event
  • Conduct evaluations of potential organ and tissue donors through review of hospital records to determine medical eligibility/suitability
  • Document required clinical information in a clear and concise manner
  • Communicate effectively with internal and external partners to facilitate the donation process
  • Communicate effectively with families of potential organ and tissue donors to provide information and support
  • Obtain and document authorization for organ and tissue donation
  • Coordinate the clinical management of deceased organ donors
  • Identify, document and communicate required clinical information to associated Gift of Hope staff, transplant center staff, and administrators
  • Coordinate medical management of potential donors with anesthesia staff to ensure appropriate hemodynamic status while in the OR
  • Coordinate the surgical recovery and distribution of deceased donor organs for transplantation or research
  • Package and label organs for transplantation or research
  • Participate in departmental quality assurance initiatives, meetings, educational activities and required training as assigned
  • Participate in training and mentoring new ORC staff and associated department staff as assigned
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Education and Training Required

The following identifies the minimum education and training required to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Associate's Degree in healthcare related field (i.e. RN, RT, or other) with a minimum of 1 year experience in a critical care setting. Bachelor's prepared critical care nurse preferred.
  • Other candidates may be considered on an individual basis at the discretion of management dependent on aligned job experience

Experience and Skills Required

The following indicates the minimum skills and experience required to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Experience in the delivery of critical care medicine
  • Ability to communicate effectively and compassionately with families of potential donors to present the option of organ and tissue donation
  • Ability to achieve and maintain competency in clinical and technical skills required to facilitate organ and tissue donation and transplantation
  • Ability to communicate the organ/tissue donation process to potential donor families and external partners
  • Ability to develop and maintain proficiency with ICU/OR equipment
  • Ability to function effectively with minimal supervision
  • Ability to coordinate the activities of self and others in an environment where priorities change quickly
  • Basic computer skills

Physical Demands

  • Ability to work outside normal business hours
  • Ability to drive personal auto to work assignments within the donor service area (Must have valid driver's license and auto insurance.)
  • Ability to work 12-hour on call shifts
  • Ability to respond to dispatches in a timely manner and arrive to work sites as assigned
  • Ability to function in an office environment and all hospital clinical practice areas
  • Ability to move donor from cart to bed with assistance
  • Ability to stand, bend, stoop and kneel to perform job functions
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. of equipment from ground level to table-top level, and to push/pull 75 lbs. on a roller cart
  • Fine motor skills to perform essential clinical and technical skills required
  • Ability to learn and use technology such as computers, mobile devices and medical equipment and related software for communication, documentation and clinical purposes
  • Ability to see, hear, speak and communicate effectively
  • Ability to use personal cell phone for business purposes

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that will be encountered by an employee while performing the essential functions of the job.
  • Office environment
  • Hospital clinical environment, including all patient care areas
  • 12-hour on call shifts
  • Travel by car or autonomous vehicle and occasionally by plane to hospitals and other meeting locations within Gift of Hope's service area
  • Occasional travel outside the service area by car, autonomous vehicle or plane to assigned conferences or meetings
  • Carry a personal cell phone to be accessible outside regular business hours
