Position

The Department of Curriculum & Instruction seeks applications for an open-ranked position in science education. This is a full-time, tenure-track, academic year, nine-month position. This faculty member's primary affiliation would be within the Math, Science, and Engineering (MSE) program area. The MSE program area is one of four program areas in the Department of Curriculum & Instruction: Curriculum Research, Early Childhood Education, Aesthetics & Teacher Education (CREATE); Language & Literacy (L&L); Math, Science, and Engineering (MSE); and Digital Environments for Learning, Teaching, & Agency (DELTA).

The MSE program area focuses on research related to teaching and learning in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). This includes scholarship focused on theories of learning in STEM domains, discourse in STEM classrooms, teacher education and STEM teaching practices, curriculum development, sociopolitical perspectives, and STEM education in informal and out-of-school contexts. MSE faculty are national and international leaders at the forefront of their fields. They prepare cutting-edge scholars who raise and address vital questions about mathematics, science, and engineering education. The MSE faculty support and encourage a wide variety of perspectives and research methodologies.

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction is ranked the 8th best graduate program in Curriculum and Instruction by US News and World Report (2024). We seek an individual who will further this tradition of excellence in research, teaching, and service in the area of science education. The specific area of interest in science education is open but we especially encourage applicants with research interests in the intersection of science education and social-justice, community-engaged scholarship, and science teaching and learning. The successful candidate will contribute to a rich tradition of conducting influential research; securing external grant funding; supporting and teaching courses in the teacher education program; teaching both face-to-face and online/hybrid courses; recruiting, mentoring and advising master's and doctoral students; and providing university, state, and professional service.

The University of Illinois has several world-renowned departments, centers, and institutes conducting cutting-edge research in science; we encourage applicants with the desire to collaborate with faculty and research labs across our campus to conduct innovative and impactful science education research. Successful candidates will have a strong interest in and commitment to both research and teacher education, and priority will be given to candidates who have an interest in leadership opportunities within the program area and the department.

Qualifications

An earned doctorate in science education, learning sciences, curriculum and instruction, or closely related field is required before the starting date. The successful applicant at the assistant professor level will d emonstrate strong potential for developing an independent research program in science education and strong accomplishments in teaching. The successful applicant at the associate or full levels will have a track record of sustained productivity in a significant program of research in science education, including a consistent record of peer-reviewed publications, success in securing external funding, leadership experience, and a strong and successful graduate and undergraduate teaching and mentoring record. Candidates at all levels should have a commitment to equity in teaching and research. Experience teaching in a K-12 setting is considered highly valuable.

Salary and Starting Date

The budgeted salary range for the position is $78,000 to $90,000 at the Assistant Professor level, $90,000 to $115,000 at the Associate Professor level, and $115,000 to $130,000 at the Full Professor level, for a nine-month service basis. The pay offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors including (but not limited to) the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate including equivalent years in rank, training, and field or discipline; internal equity; and external market pay for comparable jobs. The proposed starting date is August 16, 2025.
