Position Summary:

The Coding Representative reviews medical records to assign correct billing codes and to determine if billings comply with documentation requirements.

This position is a part time position at 50% time.

Specific Job Duties & Tasks:

  • Review medical record documentation and assign appropriate ICD-9-CM/PCS, CPT and/or HCPCS codes in accordance with coding/compliance policies, official coding, payor and regulatory guidelines.
  • Monitor compliance standards and policies to ensure Student Health receives full and accurate reimbursement for services in compliance with payor rules and regulations.
  • Investigate and resolve denials, edits and hold bills to produce accurate claims for submission.
  • Ensure coding corrections are completed when appropriate.
  • Provide providers with information related to documentation requirements for coding.
  • Assist in the training and instruction of new employees regarding coding and chart review practices.

We provide care to registered UI students, just like you would receive from your hometown healthcare provider, but we are experts in the care of college students!

We are staffed with MDs who are board-certified in family medicine, gynecology, and psychiatry. We also have certified physician assistants on staff.

Required Qualification:
  • Diploma or degree in Health Information Management program or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Work experience (typically 6mo-1yr) with ICD-10,HCPCS, and CPT coding.
  • Basic knowledge of HIPAA and CMS laws/regulations.
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
  • Understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviors at a working level proficiency.
  • Demonstrated experience creating and maintaining a welcoming and respectful environment.
  • Working knowledge of and ability to utilize tools, techniques and processes for gathering and reporting data with strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Proficiency with standard office computer software applications (i.e. Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Eligibility for certification as RHIT, RHIA, CPC, CCS, CCSP or equivalent through a nationally recognized credentialing body such as AHIMA or AAPC; must receive full certification within 18 months of hire.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience with medical coding.
  • Experience with EPIC medical billing systems.
