Job Description
General Summary

Under general supervision, assigns work to technicians within the service line or works independently as an equipment specialist for repair and maintenance of medical equipment, including safety testing, design, installation, calibration, routine maintenance and repair of complex medical equipment.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.

1. Performs highly complex design, installation, repair preventative maintenance, and service tasks working independently as a specialist.
A. Develops written procedures for testing the accuracy and safety of equipment.
B. Performs approved equipment modifications to meet user needs.
C. Performs regular preventative maintenance of the medical equipment, and recommends and implements system changes to rectify identified system problems.
2. Assigns work, and provides instruction and direction to senior technicians.
A. Reviews work orders for accuracy and completeness, determines priority work assignments, and assigns staff; schedules equipment testing, preventative maintenance, and repair activities.
B. Provides technical counsel to engineering technicians on codes, standards, maintenance, and repair of clinical electronic equipment.
C. Provides input into individual performance evaluations of biomedical engineering technicians.
3. Consult with nursing, allied health, and medical staff, regularly, regarding equipment operation and problems to obtain information in order to resolve the problem and minimize the amount of downtime.
A. Contacts vendors to arrange for equipment repair or to order parts for contractual equipment, as necessary. Obtains approval from the manager on purchase of high-dollar items.
4. Assists supervisor by performing quality assurance monitoring activities to ensure consistent and quality service is provided. Monitors and enforces The Joint Commission accreditation standards for plant technology and safety management for patient and employee safety.
A. Reviews potential safety hazards of equipment, regularly, and documents actions taken to eliminate them.
B. Performs regular manual and software checks of clinical engineering equipment for accuracy and efficiency of operation.
C. Collects statistical data on clinical engineering's repair work completed and the quality of equipment operation. Compiles computer reports.
D. Records timeliness of equipment inspections.
5. Evaluates new, rental or demonstration biomedical equipment and makes recommendations concerning acquisition. Recommends equipment purchases and standardization based upon history and experience with use of equipment.
A. Reviews and documents acceptance standards violations for newly purchased, rented, leased or loaned equipment.
6. Observes and assists supervisor with enforcement of clinical engineering practices and general departmental policies and procedures.
A. Recommends process improvements to supervisor
B. Communicates policy and procedure changes to lower level technicians.
7. Maintains departmental records, reports, including maintenance requests, electrical safety forms, files and relevant statistics in accordance with The Joint Commission and departmental standards.
8. Takes on call assignments within the department schedule and serves affiliated facilities.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Associates degree in biomedical engineering technology or Electronics Technology, or a proportional combination of education and experience, is required.
  • Minimum of five years of technical experience performing clinical or biomedical equipment installation, testing, and repair of instrumentation, power supplies, and electro/mechanical power transmission devices for all types of biomedical or radiological equipment, or equivalent, is required.
  • Experience working with lab chemistry, hematology, coagulation, or urinalysis analyzers is greatly preferred.

  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of electronics or biomedical engineering technology as applied to the calibration and repair of medical equipment is required. Familiarity with industry standards and regulations, such as The Joint Commission, National Electrical Code and OSHA/MOSH, regarding operation and maintenance of such equipment.
  • Knowledge of and ability to effectively use electronic and pneumatic measuring devices.
  • Demonstrated ability to use digital voltmeter, OHM and multimeter, oscilloscope, safety analyzer, DC power supply, soldering and de-soldering tools, and physiological vital signs simulator.
  • Demonstrated ability to physically demonstrate and to perform calibration, repair and maintenance of biomedical or radiologic equipment using specialized test equipment is required.
