Job Summary
The primary function of the Cement Finisher is to screed and finish concrete including all rubbing, patching, grinding, and finishing of exposed surfaces.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Grinds and shot blasts concrete for repairs and/or prep for coatings (e.g., decorative epoxy, urethane, and cementitious).
  • Screeds, floats, cuts joints, and finishes wet concrete to desired texture.
  • Performs structural repairs, such as grouting columns, epoxy injecting cracked concrete and related work.
  • Establishes elevations, forms, and sets screeds to prepare for concrete pours.
  • Drive and operate service vehicles used for Cement Finisher maintenance, installations, or repairs.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.

  • Additional Physical Demands
    1. Work is assigned through the foreperson, work management group, service office, or via the director of building maintenance & grounds or his designee in oral or written form. The cement finisher is responsible for ensuring their work is completed properly in accordance with statutes and codes in a safe and timely manner. The cement finisher is expected to support the Mission, Vision, Values, Guiding Principles and management operational directions and philosophies of Facilities & Services. The cement finisher must exemplify high standards of professionalism, loyalty, craftsmanship, and dedication.
    2. May work in extreme weather conditions.
    3. Must be aware of potential danger from moving parts and equipment.
    4. May be exposed to dust, loud noise, smoke, and cleaning compounds.
    5. May work in temperature extremes ranging from freezing weather to steam tunnels.
    6. Interacts with campus customers, supervision, and peers. Creates a work environment which develops accountability for performance and develops teamwork and unity within the shop and throughout campus.

    Minimum Qualifications
    • Experience sufficient to qualify as a journeyman cement finisher with four (4) years (48 months) of actual work experience at the trade, including apprentice or vocational training. (The trade for this purpose shall include work normally performed by Cement Finishers i.e. screed, and finish concrete including all rubbing, patching, grinding, and finishing of exposed surfaces.)
    • Possession of a valid State of Illinois driver's license at time of hire.
    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    • Journey-level knowledge of cement finishing.
    • Basic math skills.
    • Proficiency in handling trowels and miscellaneous hand tools.
    • Knowledge of materials used in repair and finishing of cement.
    • Ability to follow directions.
    • Good communication skills.
    • Ability to work effectively with and understand customer needs and requirements.
    • Ability to read and understand blueprints, schematics, etc.
    • Thorough knowledge of OSHA safety regulations and safe and proper use of tools and equipment.
    Appointment Information

    This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 0714 - Cement Finisher position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the search close date. The salary for this position is set by a collective bargaining agreement and is currently $39.30/hour. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.
