The Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center is seeking a STEM (science-technology-engineering-mathematics) educator to lead K-12 functions and outreach efforts for career enhancement and educational programs in the Cancer Center. This position directly supports Office of Cancer Career Enhancement and Training (OCCET) in outreach efforts to K-12 schools in its catchment area. The goal of the OCCET is to establish and foster infrastructure that coordinates and facilitates educational opportunities to enhance the careers of cancer researchers, clinicians, and community providers. This office is a central hub of resources for trainees at every stage within the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center. Key areas of responsibility include regular and multi-modal communications with all STEM contacts throughout the catchment area, structure and facilitate curriculum and programming for middle and high school trainees and their teachers, create outreach curriculum for classroom use at all grade levels, and establishing and maintaining partnerships with non-profits, business, and funding agencies. May perform other duties as assigned. This position requires a high level of discretion, confidentially, attention to detail and accuracy, and independent judgement.

This position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement of both on-campus (UIHC) and remote work within the state of Iowa upon completion of a training period, with the majority of work taking place on the U of I/UIHC campus. Per policy, work arrangements will be reviewed annually, and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location.

Duties to include:

1. Recruit, Admit, and Retain Prospective and Current Students for Programs, Major Departments or Colleges:

  • Plan, implement and coordinate/manage the high school component of HCCC's R25 Youth Enjoy Science NIH grant and American Cancer Society's DICR SHE Oncology grant.
  • Establish, integrate, and support cancer career enhancement efforts and programming for undergraduate cancer-related majors.
  • Advise prospective students (and/or their parents) regarding preparedness for undergraduate admissions, connecting to proper campus resources and admissions office.
2. Enrollment Management:
  • Develop, plan and oversee the activities and services to facilitate the admission, enrollment, appointment, and orientation of high school students HCCC's R25 Youth Enjoy Science NIH grant.
  • Monitor program enrollment, assist with program scheduling, and provide information to enrolled participants regarding program operations and requirements.
4. Academic Standards and Curriculum Policies:
  • Design and facilitate cancer-related STEM curriculum for on-campus learning for high school learners.
  • In a hybrid model, design and facilitate cancer-related programing for high school teachers to bring the latest information about cancer biology, scientific research, and STEM career opportunities to their students.
  • Design and facilitate cancer-related STEM curriculum for virtual learning for middle school/junior high and high school learners in HCCC's catchment area.
  • Design and disseminate course materials for high school and middle school/junior high teachers to facilitate cancer-related topics into their classroom curriculum.
  • Facilitate the design of cancer-related curriculum for on-campus learning for undergraduate learners.
5. Academic Program Management(Planning, Designing, Integrating, and Evaluating Curriculum):
  • Oversee the development of academic program materials to meet departmental goals.
  • Assist Associate Director and Assistant Director for Career Enhancement in formulating goals and plans and developing new initiatives.
  • Serve as liaison with faculty members participating in HCCC K-12 programming.
  • Serve as liaison with UI Center for Evaluation and Assessment on evaluating HCCC's K-12 programming.
  • Partner with UI CCOM Community Education division on STEM-focused programs and to create, implement, and offer a Mini Medical School cancer-related topic.
  • Partner with and develop cancer-related hands-on seminars for existing UI programs for high school populations including Iowa First Nations Summer Program, TRIO Upward Bound, LatinX Youth Summit, and Black Youth Summit.
  • Develop and maintain strategic cancer-related STEM communication plan for HCCC's catchment area, which may include the following modes of communication: newsletter, social media, website, media engagement, podcast, and speaking engagements.
  • Integrate and foster the involvement of advisory councils and businesses in the region to help advance cancer-related STEM education.
  • Provide representation at statewide Iowa STEM meetings upon request from The Iowa Governor's STEM Advisory Council.
6. Budget Oversight and Management:
  • Develop budget proposals for HCCC K-12 programming; and provide direction, assignments, feedback, coaching and counseling to assure outcomes are achieved.
  • Approve routine expenditures.
  • Edit and assist in writing grant proposals and progress reports.
  • Participate in coordination of strategic plans, focus groups, and implementing recommendations and action items resulting from strategic planning process.
  • Purchase program supplies, academic materials, and promotional items, arrange travel, arrange events and catering. Purchase and arrange recruitment travel. Reimburse students and recruits for out-of-pocket expenses. Reconcile p-card.
  • Create invoices, initiate billing transactions, and maintain financial reports.
  • Make recommendations on cost saving of supplies and recurring expenses.
  • Review and track program expenses using EFR and maintain budget spreadsheets. Provide Program Director with financial updates.

Required Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's degree with emphasis or comparable experience in a STEM field, marketing, economics, biomedical science, management or related area, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A Master's degree is desired.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines, follow-up, and multi-task with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across functions, levels, and departments towards shared objectives
  • Demonstrated organizational and project management skills. Ability to plan, organize, and manage complex activities.
  • Demonstrated working proficiency in the ability to work with variety of individuals and groups in a constructive manner
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking
  • Demonstrated proficiency in computer software applications, especially Microsoft Office Suite
  • The ability to occasionally assist with meetings and events outside of normal working hours is required.
  • Must have valid driver's license, good driving record and provide proof of insurance to meet UI fleet vehicle rental requirements. Travel to K-12 schools in the catchment area is required.
Highly Desirable Qualifications
  • Work experience in STEM education and the K-12 population
  • Experience planning and/or organizing meetings and group events and serving as a liaison for the organization
Desirable Qualifications
  • Work experience in STEM industry, business, or policy
  • Demonstrated ability to adjust and develop self to prepare for new or changing assignments, processes, people or priorities as organizational needs dictate at a working proficiency level
  • Knowledge of University of Iowa and University of Iowa Health Care policies, procedures, and regulations
