Job Summary
The Business Intelligence Developer is responsible for developing and maintaining business intelligence solutions for the University. This includes providing expertise to project teams, hands-on development in business intelligence applications, technical troubleshooting, complex report development, and standard report administration. Persons in this position strongly understand Business Intelligence capabilities and a Data Warehouse environment.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Use sound judgment, technical expertise, and understanding of information needs to develop, test, and implement Business Intelligence (BI) solutions that match the needs of University personnel.
- Actively participate in development and upgrade projects, working with project team members to determine conceptual solution design and analyze existing BI products, data structures, reports, and data visualizations.
- Lead Business Intelligence solution design efforts by participating in data model walkthroughs, developing and maintaining procedures, and participating in performance and tuning testing.
- Provide expertise in data visualization and related design techniques; Understand and communicate data visualization capabilities; Lead design sessions for dashboards while understanding the different means of acquiring data for a dashboard (direct DB query, extracts, etc.) and recommend the best data acquisition solution for the development of a dashboard.
- Maintain and support existing Business Intelligence solutions by answering staff questions, troubleshooting problems, modifying existing products, and maintaining policies, procedures, and documentation.
- Interact with various business, data, and information technology personnel to develop effective BI solutions.
- Develop and maintain procedures related to the scheduling and automation of enterprise standard reports.
- Maintain knowledge of industry-standard BI development practices (report development, data analysis, data visualization, and interaction) and apply that expertise to plan, design, and develop BI solutions. Provide input and support for upgrades, capacity planning, and best practices.
- Participate in the production on-call support rotation schedule for report processing and completion and provide non-business hour support, as required. Other duties as assigned.
Specialty Factor
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Any one or any combination totaling two (2) years (24 months) from the following categories:
- College coursework which includes Information Technology (IT), IT Management, Programming, IT systems, or a closely related discipline, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)
Associate's Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months)
90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)
Bachelor's Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years (36 months)
- Work experience in IT-related functions, such as hardware/software support, programming, network design, network engineering, IT systems integration, or closely related field. Based on position requirements, additional education, training, and/or work experience in the area of specialization inherent to the position may be required.
Preferred Qualifications1. Work experience in report development, dashboard development, or creating data visualizations.
2. Three (3) years of work experience in an Information Technology environment.
3. One (1) year of hands-on experience developing Business Intelligence solutions.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- 1. Proficiency in a database query language such as SQL.
- 2. Demonstrated understanding of business intelligence/data warehousing concepts.
- 3. Demonstrated ability to analyze and solve complex problems.
- 4. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
- 5. Detail-orientated and demonstrated organizational skills and thoroughness.
- 6. Experience reporting tools using a tool such as SAP Business Objects, specializing in universe design and report development.
- 7. Experience developing interactive dashboards using a tool such as Tableau.
- 8. Experience building Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) solutions.
- 9. Experience in a higher education environment.
- 10. Experience in enterprise standard report development.
- 11. Experience using tools such as TOAD, SAS, and SQL Server.
- 12. Experience in enterprise standard report development.
- 13. Experience with Enterprise Job Scheduling tools such as Automic.
- 14. Experience with Web Design
- 15. Knowledge of W3C, State of Illinois, University of Illinois, and ADA standards
Appointment Information This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5031 - Information Technology Technical Associate position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 12/17/2024. System Office jobs such as this one are not eligible for the Referral Program.
The budgeted salary range for the position is $85,000 to $91,000. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity.
