University Housing Facilities - Building Services

Job Summary
Perform custodial work required for the routine cleaning and upkeep of buildings. All University Housing staff will engage and contribute to a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion within University Housing.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Cleans and services lavatories and restrooms.
• Mops, sweeps, and scrubs floors and other surfaces.
• Operates automatic scrubbers and power sweepers, including rider type, used in connection with building cleaning and also provides operator type maintenance.
• Collects and places debris and recyclable material removed from buildings in containers for removal.
• Cleans, dusts and polishes, furniture, tables, exhibit cases, fixtures, windows, doors, trim and related furnishings.
• Performs cleaning and maintenance of carpet floor coverings.
• Washes and/or cleans window and door glass, washes and/or cleans interior glass, including partitions, framed pictures, and doors.
• Moves furniture, supplies, and miscellaneous equipment as directed.
• Cleans, renovates, and renews floor surface finishes.
• Changes light bulbs and cleans light fixtures, as required.
• Removes snow from steps and walks at building entrances and connecting walks.
• Locks and unlocks doors to buildings, classrooms, lecture rooms, or offices. Reports items that need repair.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Physical Demands
• Constantly: Standing, walking, bending, stooping
• Frequently: Stairs lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, balancing, reaching, grip/dexterity, twisting, talking, eye/hand/foot coordination, visual acuity, physical exertion :
• Occasionally: kneeling, squatting, crouching, operation of heavy machinery/equipment

Working Conditions
• Occasionally: Extreme cold, extreme heat, humidity, wet, noise, toxic, caustic chemicals, temperature changes, inclement weather, work outdoors
• Frequently: Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Position involves performing general physical activities that require considerable use of hands, arms, legs, and moving whole body, such as climbing, lifting, stooping, handling, positioning, moving materials, and manipulating items. Position involves frequent bending, remaining in a stationary position, moving throughout the assigned work area as well as moving and operating floor cleaning equipment. Position involves exerting muscle force to lift, push, pull, or carry objects. The work will be performed in all temperatures under a variety of conditions.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications

A small number of BSW job assignments in University Housing require a valid driver's license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of cleaning solutions and custodial methods.
• Ability to understand and follow oral instructions.
• Ability to read and follow written instructions, directions, labeling, and measurements.
• Ability to complete tasks in a timely manner.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 4502 - Building Service Worker position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 11/10/2024. The collective bargaining agreement sets a wage of $18.40/hr.
