Position Description

The Department of Social Work at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) invites applications for a Tenured position at the rank of Associate or Full Professor (12-month) with the appointment starting in Spring 2025.

The Position

The College of Health, Human Services, and Nursing at California State University, Dominguez Hills, seeks a dynamic individual to serve as the Chair of the Department of Social Work. The successful candidate will be an accomplished scholar in social work or a related field with a strong record of publications and grant funding. This individual should demonstrate academic leadership skills, such as experience as a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) or Master of Social Work (MSW) program director, department chair, or in related leadership roles. The candidate should have the vision to lead a department prioritizing research excellence, high-quality graduate instruction, and meaningful community engagement informed by antiracism leadership principles. The department seeks someone who will engage in transparent academic governance at the department, college, and university levels and promote faculty development through mentorship, collaboration, and training opportunities.

Responsibilities

The Chair will serve as the Director of the MSW program, responsible for managing and supervising faculty and staff, overseeing the administration and evaluation of academic programs, budgets, student advisement, and engaging in professional achievements within the social work field. The successful candidate will foster a scholarly and collegial environment that promotes excellence in teaching, research, and service. The Chair will provide leadership in curriculum development and faculty development. Additionally, the Chair will be responsible for securing and managing external funding and carrying out other duties as assigned to support the program's goals and initiatives. The position also includes overseeing state and local governmental contracts, such as California Title IV-E Social Work Education Program and Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services stipend programs.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Applicants must have experience in teaching and working with colleagues from diverse age, socioeconomic, cultural, and academic backgrounds
  • Earned doctorate in Social Work/Social Welfare or a closely related field from an accredited institution of higher education (e.g., Ph.D, DSW)
  • Earned a master's degree in social work from a CSWE-accredited program, with a minimum of two (2) years of post-MSW continuous practice experience in professional social work
  • Accomplishments that warrant appointment as a Tenured Associate or Full Professor
  • Academic leadership, with a minimum of three (3) years of experience in an administrative position with demonstrated organization and resource management skills in a university setting
  • At least six (6) recent years of satisfactory progressive teaching experience, which includes a minimum of three (3) years in an accredited (CSWE) MSW or BSW program
  • Demonstrated experience with CSWE accreditation standards as they apply to graduate programs
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated leadership in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion through teaching, scholarship, curriculum development, administrative experience, or professional activities in social work
  • Demonstrated experience and commitment to advancing anti-racist or anti-oppressive social work research and education
  • Demonstrated experience in curriculum development
  • Demonstrated experience securing and managing grants
  • A strong record of scholarly accomplishments, including publications in peer-reviewed academic journals, invited contributions to publications, invitations to present at national conferences
  • Active participation and leadership in professional organizations
  • Effective interpersonal, conflict resolution, and problem-solving skills

    The Master of Social Work (MSW) program at California State University, Dominguez Hills is purposefully designed to meet the diverse social service needs of a large metropolitan area such as Los Angeles County. By leveraging the rich diversity of ethnic groups and cultures in the region, the program prepares students for community-centered, contextually competent social work practice that is inclusive of various aspects of identity, including culture, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, religion, class, sexual orientation, and gender. The program also emphasizes the examination of bias, prejudice, and institutionalized racism, enabling students to understand how these issues can impact social work practice, policy development, and program implementation. Students are equipped with multiple perspectives and strategies for addressing these and other challenges in social work with individuals, families, and communities.

    The Department of Social Work emphasizes a psychosocial, ecological, and cross-cultural approach, with Critical Race Theory serving as the theoretical framework for contextually competent practice. The curriculum is thoughtfully developed and organized in alignment with program goals and objectives. CSUDH's Department of Social Work offers three specializations: Children, Youth, and Families; Community Mental Health; and Community Capacity Building.

    Additional Information

    The anticipated salary range for this position is $9,650 to $12,200. Please see anticipated salary ranges for the specific classifications below:

    Associate Professor (12-Month) classification salary range is $7,830 to $16,697 per month, The anticipated hiring salary range is $9,650 to $9,841 per month.

    Full Professor (12-Month) classification salary range is $9,883 to $17,490 per month. The anticipated hiring salary range is $11,900 to $12,200 per month.

    This position will be commensurate with experience and current CSUDH faculty salaries in the academic department/discipline. Faculty salaries are subject to budgetary authorization and any California State University System faculty contract increases. Summer research grants, moving expenses, start‐up funds, and a reduced teaching load may be available.
