Our aim is to recruit, support, and retain a distinguished scholar of economics to the Department of Agricultural, Environmental, and Development Economics (AEDE) to hold the C. William Swank Chair in Rural-Urban Policy. In keeping with the mission of that Chair, this person's research, teaching, and public service shall "focus on the economic and/or legal dimensions of the rural and urban interface, including issues relating to farming on the urban fringe, quality of life, externalities and environmental regulations, management, and the industrialization of agriculture."

This faculty member will lead the C. William Swank Program in Rural-Urban Policy. They will work as a current or emerging national leader producing scholarly research on issues at the rural/urban interface. They will teach undergraduate students and teach and advise graduate students conducting research on issues relevant to the Program. They will engage in outreach in Ohio, connecting with groups such as agricultural leaders and urban-rural policy and decision makers. Finally, they will manage resources of the Program in part to leverage the expertise of others to accomplish goals, including: drawing on and supporting the expertise of others in AEDE; convening meetings, events, and applied scholarship that taps the expertise of other relevant authorities nationwide.

Performance Objectives

Conduct a distinguished independent research program in the economics of rural-urban issues, including presenting research results at national and international meetings, securing extramural funding, and producing high-impact publications. Develop an effective outreach program on issues at the rural-urban interface. Manage the C. William Swank Program in Rural-Urban Policy to support their own work and leverage the expertise of others to accomplish Program goals. Elevate graduate education in the department by advising graduate students and seeking out external funds to support them, individually or in collaboration with others on campus. Teach approximately 1-2 courses per year, both graduate and undergraduate. Demonstrate an ability to cultivate learning environments that are equitable and inclusive of students with diverse social identities and backgrounds, and commitment to enhancing diversity and inclusion within AEDE and related groups. Work collaboratively with university faculty and staff, AEDE and/or OSU extension, government agencies, nongovernment organizations, and/or community groups to advance the land grant mission of the college and university. Serve the AEDE, university, and professional communities through committee work and other appropriate service responsibilities and activities.

Education and Experience Requirements

Required:

Earned Ph.D. in economics, agricultural and applied economics, public policy, or closely related degrees. Demonstrated excellence in research on the economics of issues related to the urban-rural interface. Demonstrated strength in teaching and graduate advising. The willingness and ability to conduct an effective individual outreach program. The willingness and ability to manage an endowed chair program effectively. The willingness and ability to work closely with diverse groups of academic (e.g., students, staff, faculty) and public audiences.

Desired:

Demonstrated success in securing external funding. Demonstrated strength in public engagement and outreach. At least eight years of experience in a faculty position, government agency, or other position suitable for PhD economists OR a scholarly record of sufficient strength to warrant tenure.

The Department of Agricultural, Environmental, and Development Economics (AEDE) is a national leader in applied economics with cutting-edge programs in agricultural economics and agribusiness; environmental and natural resource economics; sustainability; international and development economics; and urban, regional and community economics.
