The HELI's Associate Director will work closely with the Faculty Director and the Program Director. This is a 75% regular benefitted Professional and Scientific appointment intended to assist with programming, and 25% Instructional faculty position, making this a full-time position. Key responsibilities of the Associate Director are listed below. This position has funding for 7 years with possibility of continuation if additional funding can be identified. Specific Job Duties and Tasks:

  • Work with the HELI Program Director to organize and implement HELI programs, including workshops, conferences and webinars. This includes conducting research related to current topics of interest, reaching out to individuals with expertise on these topics, and moderating some events.
  • Implement joint initiatives with other University of Iowa departments and schools;
  • Work with the HELI Faculty Director and Program Director to identify priorities for HELI-supported research, outreach, and programming.
  • Write blog posts and other short pieces for the HELI website.
  • Work with the Program Director on the HELI website and social media presence.
  • Oversee the HELI's budget with various initiatives.
  • Direct program activities so University of Iowa policies, procedures, practices and programs are in compliance with federal, state and local legal/regulatory standards.
  • Engage with the local and regional environmental bars.
  • Engage with Iowa Law alumni.
  • Work with HELI partners on campus and in the community to oversee HELI-sponsored projects and collaborations

This position is eligible for a 25% Instructional Track Faculty Appointment

  • Teach two courses per academic year in the field of environmental, energy, and natural resources law (courses to be determined in consultation with the HELI Faculty Director and the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs);
  • Coach the annual environmental moot court team;
  • Supervise law student research assistants working on HELI-sponsored research and projects.

Education required:

  • Excellent academic credentials, including a JD degree.

Experience Required:

  • Five years of relevant experience, two of which should be in legal practice or law school teaching.
  • Demonstrated interest in environmental, energy, and natural resources law.
  • Evidence of potential in teaching in the field of environmental, energy, and natural resources law, which can be demonstrated through experience teaching in this field or through other relevant experience such as law practice involving mentoring or advising.
  • Excellent research, analytic, writing, and communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent organizational skills, including evidence of strong prioritization skills, accuracy, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to effectively interact with a population of varying perspectives.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Prior teaching experience;
  • Experience in the field of environmental, energy, and natural resources law;
  • Experience in supervising;
  • Iowa bar membership or ability to waive in;
