As part of a newly state-funded undergraduate program in public health, the Washington State University (WSU) CVM, including the Paul G. Allen School of Global Health, the School of Molecular Biosciences, and the Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology in Pullman, WA seek to fill two permanent full-time (12 month) tenure track Assistant Professor faculty positions. We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in a) health policy/health services research with a special emphasis on rural health equity, One Health, and/or Tribal and Indigenous health; or b) environmental health within rural and agricultural communities, environmental sustainability, One Health and/or environmental equity. The faculty will be housed in the Paul G. Allen School of Global Health, School of Molecular Biosciences, or the Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology based on expertise with the potential for affiliated appointments in other units in the CVM.

The degree program is a multi-college interdisciplinary degree program with multiple tracks, including an infectious disease track housed in the CVM and a behavioral health track on our Spokane and Vancouver campuses. This program includes tenure-track research and clinical faculty focused on preparing a public health workforce that will serve the needs of rural, remote and underserved communities. The curriculum was developed in collaboration with partners in the department of health and other industry stakeholders to reflect creative academic solutions to workforce needs. Opportunities to work with WSU's global campus and develop certificate programs and micro-credentialing are ongoing, with areas of expertise including infectious disease, behavioral health, global health, one health, tribal and indigenous health, and epidemiology.

The CVM is home to long-standing, highly recognized research and training programs in infectious disease as well as many post-DVM residency training programs.

Summary of Duties:

This position will have a significant emphasis on undergraduate instruction, outreach and program building, and scholarly activity. Activities of outreach and program building will be replaced over time with greater scholarly activity. Final effort distribution will be based on candidate qualification and interest but will be expected to devote a minimum of 50% effort towards research.

Undergraduate Teaching: Work with current faculty to instruct core courses in the public health undergraduate curriculum (e.g., Introduction to Public Health; Introduction to Health Systems Organization; Environmental Health; Community Health). Design and teach new courses as determined by programmatic needs and faculty expertise. Instruction in upper-level undergraduate courses focused on areas of expertise is encouraged.

Public Health Program Building and Outreach: Working with public health program and college leadership, contribute to curriculum development based on current and future public health employment trends. Develop relationships with local, regional and state organizations to leverage and develop experiential learning opportunities and network with community partners.

Scholarly Activity: Engage in collaborative and applied research and other scholarly activities in accordance with tenure requirements.

Academic Service: Participate at department, college, university, discipline and national levels. This could include service such as search committees, task forces, college of university service, peer review of teaching, and conference development. Departmental camaraderie and collegiality through participation in academic service is expected.

Required Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree (PhD or DrPH) in the field of health policy, environmental health, health administration, public health, infectious disease, epidemiology or a closely related discipline.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Health Policy candidates will ideally have demonstrated experience in health policy/health services research with an emphasis on rural health equity. Specific areas of emphasis may include, but are not limited to, evaluating the equity effects of changes in policy on vulnerable populations, estimating the contribution of systemic and structural factors on disparities in access to evidence-based health care services, and informing the design of health system interventions to improve equitable health outcomes.

  • Environmental Health candidates will ideally have demonstrated experience in rural and/or agricultural environmental health, sustainability, environmental equity, or One Health.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with interprofessional and collaborative teams

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with a variety of stakeholders including students, industry partners, faculty and staff

  • A successful record of teaching at undergraduate, graduate and/or professional medical levels

  • Completed post-doctoral training

Annual Salary:

$120,000 - $130,000

In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.
