The Career and Technical Certificate (C.T.C.) in Diesel Systems Technology prepares students for employment or specialized training as a service technician. The program provides instruction on theory and operation through courses that are aligned with the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification areas. The program is built to prepare students for employment as bus, truck, and diesel engine mechanics, diesel mechanics helpers, mobile heavy equipment mechanics, construction equipment mechanics, and industrial truck mechanics. The content includes, but is not limited to, maintaining and repairing diesel engines and electrical systems, reconditioning diesel fuel injection systems, overhauling diesel engines, and performing diesel engine preventive maintenance. Additionally, part of the program will allow students to participate in a COOP component working at a local diesel repair shop.

Under general supervision, the Assistant Professor will develop, prepare, and teach a variety of coursework related to Diesel Systems Technology. This position will be housed at the Northwest campus but may be assigned to one of the College's six educational centers throughout Alachua and Bradford counties. Candidates must have the flexibility to teach during the day, evening, or online, as well as taught using other distance learning formats. This position has a 9-month contract based on teaching 15 credit hours in the fall and 15 credit hours in the spring. Summer instructional opportunities may be available for additional compensation based upon departmental need

The position's starting salary is $48,360 annually. Any salary amount above this is commensurate upon an individual's qualifications.

Responsibilities and duties include:

  • Plans, organizes, and delivers instruction to didactic, laboratory and/or classroom settings to promote student success within a community college setting and that promotes subject mastery and success.
  • Supports and promotes the college and departmental missions centered on excellence in teaching and learning through quality instruction, curriculum enhancement, and timely service.
  • Collaborates with faculty and peers to evaluate, revise, and develop curriculum and pedagogical methods that cultivates the mastery of course content.
  • Demonstrates technological literacy and innovation in the delivery of instruction and incorporates real-world experiences into lessons and classroom discussions.
  • Works collaboratively as part of a cohesive academic team.
  • Participates in advisory board meetings, departmental meetings, and collegewide committees as needed.
  • Assists with the implementation of college policies, objectives, and functions in accordance with the SF philosophy, mission, strategic initiatives, and procedures.
  • Provides student with frequent, timely assessment and clear feedback regarding academic performance.
  • Develops methods that fairly and accurately assess students' progress in achieving the stated learning outcomes/objectives.
  • Appropriately documents student progress and maintains records including attendance and achievement of learning outcomes.
  • Submits supply and equipment purchase requests for program support of student learning.
  • Maintains appropriate office hours proportionate to the instructional assignment.
  • Strictly honors the privacy and security of student records and other sensitive information according to appropriate state, federal and college regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Complies with all published College Rules, procedures, guidelines, and laws/regulations governing public employees, including but not limited to those related to document retention and destruction, FERPA, and confidentiality.
  • Provides service excellence through courteous, informed, accessible, and professional engagement.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Reports to: Chair, Construction and Technical Programs

QUALIFICATIONS

Required: ASE Master Medium Heavy Truck Diesel Certification, demonstrated competencies in the specific discipline listed in the qualifying fields, and at least four (4) years of work experience in the diesel technology field.

Additional Requirements: A criminal background check will be conducted.

Preferred: Prior teaching experience in a community college and/or university settings as well as familiarity with classroom technologies and productivity tools.
