Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

Honors Carolina is a four-year academic program geared toward the top 10% of undergraduates at UNC, and is comprised of a remarkable collection of courses, study abroad programs, special events, career development, and other learning opportunities. It is the University's way of investing in truly exceptional undergraduate students by providing academic and non-academic challenges and opportunities, both inside and outside the classroom. Approximately 2100 students are currently members of Honors Carolina. These students enjoy priority enrollment in more than 200 honors courses each year. These are small classes, taught by award-winning professors who encourage classroom discussion and hands-on research. Outside of the classroom, members of Honors Carolina attend a diverse roster of co-curricular programs designed to help students explore their interests; prepare for life after graduation; and connect with students, faculty, alumni, and leaders around the globe. The Honors Carolina 'Go Anywhere' initiative is a comprehensive plan to elevate the program's reputation among industry leaders, position it as a destination of choice for top recruiters, and prepare students to seize opportunities before them through intensive advising and coaching.

Position Summary:

The Assistant Director of Communications & Development reports to the Peter T. Grauer Associate Dean for Honors Carolina in the College of Arts and Sciences and the Director of Development for Honors Carolina. It provides oversight of all Honors Carolina promotions, branding, and communications to ensure consistent, accurate, engaging messaging to all internal and external stakeholders. The position is responsible for managing Honors Carolina annual giving, with an emphasis on current students, parents and families, and young alumni. Additionally, this position is responsible for providing administrative support for development operations.

Duties include development, implementation, and maintenance of the following: a robust, dynamic digital presence through social media, web sites, video platforms, and news outlets; an annual giving strategy and outreach campaign; a marketing plan for programs and special events; a parents and families engagement plan. The person in this position will work with team members to develop and hone messaging associated with annual giving, student recruitment, global programming, internship and job opportunities, and events. This position will assist with the planning and execution of fundraising initiatives including drafting solicitation emails and letters; coordinating solicitation calendars; delivering appeals within established timelines. This position will serve as the department's primary communications officer and liaison to other communications groups and news outlets across campus.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Requires strong background in social media management and strategic marketing; excellent written and oral communication skills for the purposes of writing press releases and generating web content, designing and writing marketing materials (print and digital), and managing web content; extensive experience with social media channels and tools; ability to manage multiple, ongoing projects; ability to work professionally as a team member, as well as interact with faculty, staff, students and other University personnel / units, and others outside the University (including donors and alumni); ability to maintain information with great accuracy and detail and exhibit excellent organizational and time management skills, while successfully prioritizing level of urgency of competing interest; proficiency in MS Office, Adobe InDesign, WordPress, Photoshop, and/or Illustrator.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Prior experience in communications and marketing. Prior experience in fundraising in a higher education or non-profit setting is preferred, which could include experience in annual fund, major gifts, corporate relations, prospect management, sales or other transferable skills. Preferred knowledge of fundraising databases. Strong analytical, creative, and strategic thinking skills.
