Job Summary
Provide academic advising for the undergraduate program in Mathematics.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide academic advising for all undergraduate math majors; serve as primary advisor for approximately 1/3 of our majors.
  • Advise students in mathematical majors during summer orientation.
  • Primary personnel for monitoring and answering messages to the Mathematics Advising email account.
  • Field questions from students and parents about the math placement exams. Provide math placement advising to students in any major. Advise students dropping to a lower math course. Assist with other undergraduate office advising tasks as needed.
  • Check freshman midterm grades and apply advising holds as needed.
  • Meet with families during Admitted Student Days; provide a presentation or a Q&A with families of prospective or admitted students. Organize and train a group of undergraduates to represent the department at special events.
  • Other duties as assigned to further the mission of the unit.
Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree.

Two (2) years of work experience in a student- or education-related area.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in Mathematics or closely related field.

College-level advising experience.

  • Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively, with a wide range of on-campus and off-campus constituencies.
  • Knowledge of academic skills and student development issues associated with undergraduate student populations, especially those that require enhanced advising and academic skills support.
  • Successful candidates will demonstrate a working level of proficiency in the following competencies:
  • Facilitating Student Development, Success, and Outcomes: Ability to work developmentally with students; ability to promote student learning, development, and success by applying varied advising approaches to diverse individual student situations.
  • Communicating for Effective Relationships: Knowledge and application of communication techniques (including listening skills) and relationship-building skills to work with a variety of individuals and groups in a constructive and collaborative manner.
  • Communicating Complex Concepts: Knowledge and use of summarization and simplification techniques to explain complex concepts in simple, clear language appropriate to the audience.
  • Using Resourcefulness and Good Judgment: Ability to apply past experience and analysis of information to arrive at sound and timely conclusions.
  • Planning and Organizing: Ability to mobilize time and other resources to get things done.
  • Valuing Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging: Ability to work with a variety of individuals in a constructive and civil manner while appreciating the unique contribution of individuals from varied cultures, race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, sexual orientation and gender identity.
Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the deadline The budgeted salary range for the position is $45,000-55,000. We strive to provide a competitive salary, considering factors such as available market data, internal equity,
candidate experience and qualifications, collective bargaining agreements, and budget constraints. The final salary offer will be determined through a thorough assessment of these elements. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.
